Subject Lead - Mr. A Hogbin

At Dubmire, we believe that mathematics plays a key role in a child's early development. From a very young age, children are naturally curious and begin to use early mathematical concepts through play. By developing this early understanding of mathematics, we aim to create a love of learning, which allows children to not only develop their own subject knowledge, but creates lifelong learners and mathematicians of the future.

Early Years Maths:

At the heart of our EYFS maths curriculum is the intent to develop a strong grounding in number, which will provide all chidlren with the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. By providing frequent and varied opportunities to build and apply this understanding, chidlren will  secure a base of knowledge and vocabulary from which mastery mathematics is built. Through the use of songs and rhymes children are repeatedly exposed to a wide variety of mathematical concepts. As we have a fantastic outdoor forest school facility, children are provided with opportunities for varied mathematical learning. Mud kitchens and outdoor water-sand areas allow our children to challenge their mathematical thinking in an open ended way.

Maths Curriculum:

In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in mathematics, we at Dubmire ensure lessons are designed in a carefully sequenced journey, which embeds new learning, whilst consolidating prior knowledge. Significant time is spent developing a deep knowledge of the key ideas, which are needed to underpin future learning. In doing so, the structure and connections within mathematics are emphasised, so pupils develop a deep learning, which can be sustained. For those pupils who grasp concepts rapidly, challenge is provided through the exploration of rich and sophisticated problems, which further embed and deepen knowledge. However, if pupils fail to grasp a concept or procedure, this is identified quickly and early intervention ensures that the pupil is ready to move forward with the whole class.

Maths Policy:

Maths in real-life contexts:

At Dubmire, we believe that Maths should not just be seen as a subject in isolation. Within our curriculum, we ensure children are provided with opportunities to engage with maths in real-life contexts. By teaching the chidlren everyday maths skills such as: budgeting, financial planning and route planning, we aim to provide children with a secure understanding of maths outside the classroom.

The Dubmire Times Table Rock Stars Cup

As part of our maths homework, Years Two - Six engage with the Times Table Rock Stars Programme. Throughout the week, each class compete against each other to see who will lift the Dubmire Times Table Rock Stars Cup! As part of our celebratory assembly, the winning class is announced - alongside our Key Stage One and Key Stage Two winners.

To celebrate World Maths Day, we provide the children with the opportunity to showcase their times table skills in a competition against members of staff! This has become an annual tradition and something all children look forward too.
